Why Your Pickleball Career Didn’t End—It Just Needs a Tune-Up

It always starts the same way.

You’re feeling good. Maybe even great. You’ve strung together a few solid games, your confidence is high, and suddenly… you are Ben Johns. Your third shot drop is working, your partner is calling you “dangerous,” and you’re already mentally accepting your future tournament winnings.

Then it happens.

A quick lunge to the right. A stretch just a little too far. A twist, a pop, or that unmistakable “uh-oh” feeling. And just like that… you’re not playing next week.

Welcome to the not-so-glamorous side of pickleball.

At Sampsell Physical Therapy & Functional Wellness, we see this story play out all the time. The most common culprits? Nagging knee pain, stiff hips that don’t rotate well, low back tightness, and shoulders that protest every overhead smash attempt. What’s interesting is that the injury itself is rarely the full story. It’s usually the final straw.

Take Mark, for example (name changed to protect his pickleball reputation). Mark came in frustrated. He hadn’t played in three weeks because of knee pain that showed up “out of nowhere.” Except, it didn’t.

As we walked through his movement, it became clear: limited hip mobility, poor ankle stability, and a back that wasn’t contributing like it should. His knee was simply the middleman, taking the hit for everything else that wasn’t doing its job.

This is where physical therapy changes the game.

Instead of chasing symptoms, we look at how your entire body moves—because pickleball is a full-body sport, whether you realize it or not. Every quick cut, every reach, every explosive step relies on coordination between your joints, muscles, and nervous system.

For Mark, we didn’t just treat the knee. We restored hip rotation, improved ankle mobility, and worked on spinal movement so his body could distribute force more efficiently. We layered in strength where he needed stability and mobility where he was locked up.

Within a few visits, something interesting happened.

Not only was his knee pain decreasing… his game was improving.

He was moving better, reacting quicker, and—perhaps most importantly, playing without that constant hesitation that comes from wondering if your body is about to betray you.

That’s the real win.

Because pickleball isn’t just about competition. It’s about community, movement, and doing something you enjoy without fear. When injuries take that away, it’s frustrating, not just physically, but mentally.

The good news?

Most pickleball injuries aren’t the end of your playing days. They’re a signal. A message from your body that something needs to change.

And when you address the root cause, not just the pain, you don’t just get back on the court.

You come back better.
