When most people think about physical therapy, they think about exercises, stretching, or hands-on treatment. While those are certainly important, true healing often requires looking deeper at what’s happening inside the body. One of the most valuable tools we have to better understand health is bloodwork.
Blood tests can reveal a tremendous amount about how the body is functioning—levels of inflammation, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormone imbalances, immune activity, and more. When interpreted properly, this information can provide clues about why someone is experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, slow healing, or recurring injuries.

As a healthcare provider, I believe it’s incredibly important to understand and analyze bloodwork trends. While my role as a physical therapist is not to diagnose medical conditions in the same way a physician does, having knowledge of blood markers allows me to better support the whole person—not just the injured body part.
Many musculoskeletal problems are influenced by systemic health. For example, deficiencies in vitamin D, magnesium, iron, or B vitamins can contribute to muscle weakness, fatigue, poor recovery, and increased inflammation. Elevated inflammatory markers or immune responses may also play a role in persistent pain or slow healing.
Understanding these patterns allows me to have more informed conversations with patients about their overall health and potential areas to explore further with their primary care physician. In some cases, simple nutritional or lifestyle adjustments—often guided by appropriate supplementation—can support the body’s natural healing processes.
It’s important to emphasize that this type of guidance does not replace medical care from a physician. Instead, it complements it. My goal is never to diagnose or treat medical conditions outside my scope, but rather to help patients better understand their bodies and encourage collaboration with their doctors when certain patterns appear in their bloodwork.
One unique advantage for patients at Sampsell Physical Therapy & Functional Wellness is my ability to order comprehensive bloodwork panels when appropriate. This allows us to look deeper into potential factors that may be affecting recovery, energy levels, inflammation, immune function, and overall health.
Once we have that information, we can begin identifying potential areas where the body may need additional support. In certain situations, I can also help guide patients toward high-quality, professional-grade supplements designed to support healing, reduce inflammation, and optimize metabolic health. These supplements are carefully selected and used as part of a broader wellness strategy—not as a replacement for proper medical care.
I recently worked with a patient who had been struggling with persistent fatigue, frequent headaches, and slow recovery from minor injuries. Despite exercising regularly and attending therapy, she felt like her body just wasn’t responding the way it should.
When she shared her recent bloodwork with me, several markers stood out—low iron saturation, elevated inflammatory indicators, and a vitamin D level that suggested her body was under significant stress. These findings didn’t provide a diagnosis, but they did offer valuable clues.
I encouraged her to discuss these results with her physician while we also focused on supporting her overall health. With appropriate guidance, she began addressing some of these deficiencies with nutritional strategies and targeted supplementation. Over the following months, her energy improved, her headaches became less frequent, and her progress in therapy accelerated significantly.
This is a powerful reminder that healing rarely happens in isolation. The body is an integrated system, and sometimes the missing piece isn’t just mechanical—it’s metabolic, nutritional, or inflammatory.
At Sampsell Physical Therapy & Functional Wellness, my goal is to help patients look at the bigger picture of their health. By combining movement analysis, hands-on therapy, bloodwork insight, and supportive nutritional strategies, we can often uncover obstacles that may be slowing progress.
Your body is always communicating through symptoms, movement patterns, and even lab values. When we take the time to listen to all of those signals, we often discover opportunities for healing that might otherwise be missed.
